God preserves His remnant, His people. At all times throughout history God is in authority and He is always carrying out His perfect will. In 1 Kings 19 we find the account of Elijah who is on the run as a persecuted prophet. In fear of his life he prays for death declaring, “the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only , am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” We must never allow a wicked culture to take our hope or faith that God is in control even in the absolute worst of times. God was with Elijah and His people in Elijah’s day as He has been with His elect in every age. Ephesians 1 gives us assurance that God has chosen His elect before the foundation of the world and there is no wicked force that can thwart His plans. Christ is reigning indeed and He is doing whatever He pleases. In application, the Christian is to take heart, be courageous and obey Christ in the face of adversity or in the face of a Godless culture for we have assurance that God is sovereign, we are His, and His plans will not fail.
